History of the Anambra State Judiciary
The Judiciary of Anambra State stands as one of the pillars of governance, dedicated to upholding justice, the rule of law, and the protection of fundamental rights. Its history is rooted in Nigeria's post-independence judicial development and the evolution of state structures following the creation of Anambra State. Anambra State was created on August 27, 1991, following the split of the old Anambra State into present-day Anambra and Enugu States. Prior to this, judicial matters within the territory now known as Anambra State were under the jurisdiction of the judiciary of the old Anambra State, headquartered in Enugu. With the creation of the new state, the Anambra State Judiciary emerged as an independent judicial institution, established in accordance with the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. The Judiciary comprises the High Court of Justice, Magistrate Courts, and Customary Courts, all functioning under the leadership of the Chief Judge of Anambra State. Over the years, the judiciary has grown in both capacity and influence. From its early days, with a limited number of judges and courtrooms, it has expanded its presence across the state through the establishment of judicial divisions in various local government areas. This decentralization has made justice more accessible to the people of Anambra. The Judiciary has been led by several eminent jurists who have contributed immensely to the development of judicial integrity and legal professionalism in the state. Each administration has added value to the structure, reputation, and operations of the judiciary, ensuring it remains a beacon of justice. In recent years, the Anambra State Judiciary has embraced technological innovation in response to the growing need for speed, transparency, and efficiency in the dispensation of justice. Notable among these innovations are the digitalization of court processes, automation of case filing and tracking, introduction of real-time verbatim court reporting, and the establishment of virtual courtrooms—all of which are transforming how justice is delivered. Today, the Anambra State Judiciary is not only a guardian of legal order but also a forward-thinking institution committed to continuous improvement. Its progress reflects the resilience, integrity, and reform-oriented vision of the state’s legal community and leadership. As it continues to evolve, the Anambra State Judiciary remains dedicated to upholding the principles of justice, ensuring equal access to all, and maintaining its independence as the third arm of government.
